If there was any game on the schedule that I personally looked forward to, it was this game. Last year we lost twice to Basils and it stuck with me for a year. We lost two close games with one game being decided by the officials. We all knew we should have won twice and those two losses kept us out of the playoffs. Basils is very equally matched with us and has been the past five years with Basils holding a 3-5 advantage over us. I asked all of you to play at your best and you rose to the occasion. You all set the tempo for this game early controlling the ball in the middle of the field and dominating in our offensive end. A bouncy field proved hard to tame for Grace as several balls avoided her stick on an open net. Two goals were questionably turned away from us early but you kept at it until Kayla finally made one stick at the 23rd minute thanks to another great pass from Maddy. Colleen’s hard work the past two games would pay off when she took an assist from Nikki and put us back on the board again with only two minutes left in the half. Our defense was stingy only allowing a few shots in the first half as Dani, Vicky, and Julie rejected all incoming passes and dribbles into the circle. What got passed them was quickly cleared away from Kerri Eiben in net. The officials once again saw something we didn’t and gave a corner to Basils which they eventually capped on and it was once again a typical tight VJM – Basils game. This would change with one of the best runs up the field and into the circle by Grace Hoover. Grace looked like she was weaving through a mine field and got off a pass to Nikki that was stopped and smothered by the goalie creating our first penalty stroke of the season. Gibbs would finally get her chance to prove that her PS practice shots did not go to waste and they didn’t. Gibbs fired a shot to the lower left side of the cage to make it a two goal game. Maddy, mostly known for her great passes, would seal the win with our fourth goal of the game thanks to an assist from Kayla Everett. Other notable players today were Molly, Devon, Kelsey, Jazzy, and Kiera who were always in the right place at the right time providing excellent defensive marking, support, and passes. You played hard for a full 60 minutes and that result was a great all around victory that you should all be proud of.
Push yourself again and again. Don't give an inch until the final buzzer sounds. Larry Bird, NBA HOF
